There's a goldmine in the sky....

So Elie Weasel Wiesel (The Man With The Missing Tatoo) has finally shuffled off these mortal coils. And I'll bet the old fraud is now engaged in tense appearance rights negotiations with Yahweh (or maybe Beelzebub) as he plots his next career move. Whoever it is will have His work cut out because Elie is one hell of a business operator. After all he virtually founded the lucrative Holocau$t™ industry, an industry which after more than half a century still continues to generate lorry loads of shekels annually.

The foundation of his career was Night, which is apparently 'a masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps'. Mmmmm. At latest count there are six versions of this masterpiece. Which means that were they discover one more they could combine them into an anthology and call it Week. Incidentally they're all as different as, well, day and Night. But as my Uncle Schlomo used to say, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Did I mention that Elie has also been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? He has indeed. And he got it without leaving that trail of death and destruction which characterises most Peace Prize laureates (Kissinger, Begin, Obama). Probably the best the Nobel Committee had to work with was this excerpt from Legends of Our Time [chapter 12]: "Every Jew, somewhere in his being, should set apart a zone of hate -- healthy, virile hate -- for what the German personifies and for what persists in the German. To do otherwise would be a betrayal of the dead."

Peace and love to you too, man.

So farewell then Elie, a grateful industry remembers you.
